How to Calculate Your GPA

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is one of the most important numbers in your academic career. It’s used for college admissions, scholarship applications, and even job applications. Understanding how it’s calculated puts you in control.

The GPA Formula

GPA = Total Grade Points / Total Credit Hours

Where Grade Points for each course = Grade Value × Credit Hours.

A+ / A4.0
A-3.7
B+3.3
B3.0
B-2.7
C+2.3
C2.0
C-1.7
D+1.3

Step-by-Step Example

Let’s calculate the GPA for a semester with 4 courses:

CourseGradeCreditsGrade Points
CalculusA44.0 × 4 = 16.0
EnglishB+33.3 × 3 = 9.9
PhysicsA-43.7 × 4 = 14.8
HistoryB33.0 × 3 = 9.0
Total grade points = 16.0 + 9.9 + 14.8 + 9.0 = 49.7
Total credits = 4 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 14
GPA = 49.7 / 14 = 3.55

Cumulative GPA

Your cumulative GPA includes all semesters combined. If you have:

  • Semester 1: 45 grade points over 15 credits → 3.0
  • Semester 2: 49.7 grade points over 14 credits → 3.55
Cumulative GPA = (45 + 49.7) / (15 + 14)
Cumulative GPA = 94.7 / 29
Cumulative GPA = 3.27

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?

GPA is calculated by multiplying each course’s grade point value by its credit hours to get grade points, summing all grade points, then dividing by total credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course gives 12 grade points. Add up all courses and divide by total credits.

What is a good GPA?

A GPA above 3.0 is generally considered good. For competitive graduate programs and scholarships, aim for 3.5 or higher. Dean’s List typically requires 3.5+, while Latin honors (Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude) require 3.5, 3.7, and 3.9 respectively at most institutions.

Can I raise a low GPA?

Yes, but it becomes harder as you accumulate more credits. Taking additional courses with high grades will gradually pull your cumulative GPA up. The earlier you start improving, the bigger the impact. Use this calculator to model different scenarios.

Calculate GPA in Notes Calculator

Notes Calculator’s variables, total, and average functions make GPA calculations straightforward:

# Fall 2026 Semester

// Course grade points (grade × credits)
Calculus = 4.0 * 4
English = 3.3 * 3
Physics = 3.7 * 4
History = 3.0 * 3

total grade points = Calculus + English + Physics + History
total credits = 4 + 3 + 4 + 3
GPA = total grade points / total credits

Use tabs to track each semester separately, and headings (#) to label them. Change any grade value and your GPA updates instantly — great for modeling “what if I get an A in Physics?” scenarios. The average keyword can also quickly average a list of consecutive numbers.
